Nathan Jones is Australia’s gentle giant when it comes to acting. From a career as a strongman and then WWE Wrestler Jones is now at home in front of camera. From his terrifying role in horror flick Charlie’s Farm through to acting alongside Brad Pitt in Troy and having a major role in Mad Max: Fury Road there is little doubt that Jones has made it as an actor.
About to appear at Oz Comic-Con Jones recently sat down with HEAVY Mag to chat about the convention and his upcoming role in The Scorpion King: Book Of Souls (where he nearly died on the set) and he dropped us an absolute stinger about the future of Mad Max.
HEAVY started asking Jones whether he looks forward to big conventions like Oz Comic-Con “I’m a bit of a Trekkie,” he admits. “I went to a Star Trek convention in Sydney once and Patrick Stewart was there and that was really awesome… I really enjoyed it. But everybody started taking pictures of me, which was a bit weird. But this is my first Comic-Con really for me to appear at as a host… so I am little bit scared really. It is my first time but it will be fun because I love socialising with people.”
When we go right to reflect on Jones’ career as an actor he admits that it wasn’t a career he saw coming when he was a wrestler. “It sort of happened by accident,” he says. “I won The Highland Games in either 1995 or 1996 and then I came home and then I got contacted by Good Morning Australia and their production company got me to pick up the back of a ute and I pushed it down the street and then Liz Hayes was interviewing me and it just so happened that Jackie Chan was watching the show and he got in contact and said “I want you in my next movie.” And that is how I got my first movie First Strike which was filmed on the Gold Coast.”
