Ritz Cinemas in Randwick is taking it outside with the fun new Ritz Laneway Cinema. It’s popping up in the laneway behind the building, screening films every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night from sundown this summer.
Ritz Laneway Cinema kicks off its 2019/2020 program with a bang – Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker screening under the stars each night from Friday 20 – Saturday 21 December.
Following Star Wars, the Ritz Laneway program is filled with an array of new release films (able to be programmed on the actual day of their release in cinemas), from blockbusters to arthouse fare, as well as Retro Thursdays throughout January.
Family adventure film Jumanji: The Next Level screens on Boxing Day, followed by the star-studded new musical Cats on Friday 27 December, and Taika Waititi’s hilarious and poignant anti-hate satire Jojo Rabbit on Saturday 28 December.
Greta Gerwig’s take on Little Women, and Guy Ritchie’s return to the gangster flick The Gentlemen screen on Friday 3 and Saturday 4 January, respectively. Australian director of Macbeth and Snowtown, Justin Kurzel’s new film True History of the Kelly Gang screens on Friday 10 January, and Sam Mendes’ single-take war epic shot by legendary cinematographer Roger Deakins, 1917 shows on Saturday 11 January.
Dolittle, starring Robert Downey Jr. in the titular role of Doctor Dolittle screens on Friday 17 January, followed by Bombshell starring the powerhouse trio of Nicole Kidman, Charlize Theron, and Margot Robbie on Saturday 18 January. Beauty industry comedy starring Rose Byrne, Tiffany Haddish, and Salma Hayek Like a Boss screens on Friday 24 January, followed by Tom Hanks heartwarmer A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood on Saturday 25 January.
On four Thursdays in January, fun Retro Thursday favourites screen at Ritz Laneway. Teen classic 10 Things I Hate About You screens on Thursday 2 January; Labyrinth celebrates what would have been David Bowie’s birthday (January 8) on Thursday 9 January (only one day late!); 80s romantic fairytale The Princess Bride is on Thursday 16 January; and Spike Lee’s steamy summer drama Do the Right Thing sizzles up on the screen on Thursday 23 January.
Complete with comfortable director’s chair seating, a dedicated Ritz Laneway snack bar, and headsets for audio, Ritz Laneway Cinema provides a unique, fun, and exciting visit to the movies.
Existing as a picture theatre since 1937 and now Heritage-listed, Ritz Cinemas is one of only two original Art Deco cinemas remaining in Sydney. Family-owned, independent, and still offering the lowest price movie tickets around, Ritz Cinemas has survived a fascinating history of tumultuous change and holds an important place in the local culture.
